Sorry, I know this is pretty long, but it's pretty funny if you've been to my school...ah, good memories.
Nobody ever knows what to expect during a day in the life of a 9th grader at [blank] Jr. High. Something new happens every day. With projects, PE, grades, and goof-offs, going to school adds color to the lives of the students. And even though the freshmen are stuck with the middle schoolers, school is never dull.
An average day in the life might begin at about 7:30. Students trickle into the building from various sources of transportation, including buses, carpools, and the occasional skateboard. During the brief wait in the gym, one might see people gossiping, doing homework, sleeping, or doing any number of things. But it isn’t until the bell rings that things really get interesting.
Immediately after the bell rings, the stampede commences. Everyone begins rushing to his or her locker and first period classroom before the tardy bell rings. It’s common to see students racing to and from the band room as people surge to the locker areas. Despite this, the halls clear pretty quickly. But the peace only lasts for about 50 minutes before the stampede begins again.
The classes at [blank] are generally very good. One of the best classes is probably Spanish. A lot happens in Spanish class. For example, one day the students were writing answers to the homework on the board. One tall student was writing at the top of the whiteboard. The teacher noticed. “Hey!” she said. “I won’t be able to erase that!” Another interesting event was Spanish food day. Every student brought in some kind of exotic food unique to a Spanish-speaking country. Some people found it harder than others to expand their tastes with the unusual foods. The famous “Battle of the Paper Apple” also made the class more interesting. This was the fierce fight between two students over a paper apple off of a nametag.
Another very interesting class is biology. Biology, like all sciences, is very tricky. For example, during one of the early labs, the students had to mix chemicals until they changed color. But how much did the color have to change? Nobody knows. Technology adds interest to biology class, too. For living in the age of technology, the society is full of technologically challenged people. Or maybe the technology is too complicated. Whichever, watching people struggle with elaborate slideshows and stubborn computers makes this class more fun.
An unusual class is Personal Fitness. PF is in part an interesting class because every period has it in a different room. One period has class in a room with a jokester. This teacher makes signs and holds them up so the class speaks out as one. Another fun event is the occasional class sing-along. So far the class has sung the hit single, “18 Wheels on a Big Rig”. And on Fridays, the class goes to a nearby bowling alley to bowl. There, the students indulge in many treats, including French fries, nachos, and Skittles while completing their games.
A favorite class among the students is Study Hall. In most classes, the first ten minutes or so are occupied with the teacher writing passes for the students to various destinations. After that, the students are free to study and do homework. In addition to these permitted activities, many students also read, eat, sleep, and pass notes. Students also occasionally write random essays in Study Hall. Study Hall is a favorite of many students.
Lunch is considered by many students to be the best part of the day. The 9th graders have the privilege of eating outside in the courtyard, so they battle for seats in the sun while the younger students settle down inside. Once seated, the students trade and split lunches, crack jokes, and tell stories. On Thursdays and Fridays, lunch is even better because the students can buy warm cookies for 50 cents each. Lunch also serves as a Study Hall or tutoring session for many students who have forgotten to do their homework.
English class is almost as much fun as lunch is. In this class, the students enjoy learning vocabulary, writing skills, and grammar. Some of the classes get to write all period on Friday on any topic. But that isn’t the only thing that makes it fun. Students just seem to think creatively in English class. One of the more interesting discussions that has occurred is, “Why are people always afraid of big black guys but not big white guys?” “Because white guys look goofy!” Another interesting discussion came up when we were talking about Napoleon. Naturally, people confused Napoleon with Neapolitan ice cream. One student was talking about this beloved ice cream. “Vanilla, strawberry,” “and DEATH!” another student cut in. And the books found in the English classroom make the class even better. A favorite is called DUH! A Stupid History of the Human Race. It is in this book that the wonderful quote, “Never miss a good chance to shut up” was found.
Another fascinating class is math. A lot of interesting stuff happens in this class. For instance, on one occasion, a class discussed reasons a car might stop. Among the possible reasons suggested was there might be a cat in the gas tank, or the car might be too embarrassed to go any further because it was so ugly. Another interesting discussion climaxed in the discovery that if you don’t know, the answer is always 42, as told in A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Many useful things are learned in math class.
Government is respected by all students as one of the most interesting classes. For one thing, this is the only class that has a class mascot, “Li’l Maxso”. Li’l Maxso is basically the class clown. On one occasion, this student slapped a wasp, and was surprised when he got stung. Another interesting event is the occasional game of bonus point hockey. However, hockey isn’t the most dangerous thing in the government classroom, since the class takes so many precautions. The most dangerous thing is the overhead projector, which has somehow morphed to shine ten thousand times more brightly than the sun. The class takes safety precautions, though, so no one gets hurt. One more source of interest is the teacher. He is not from South Carolina, and his accent is the source of much ridicule, particularly the way he pronounces Clemson as Clem-zun. The teacher also isn’t used to some of South Carolina’s customs. On one occasion, he was complaining about how putting pickles on sandwiches makes the bread turn green. One student said it all. “Welcome to South Carolina.” she said. “That’s what we like here.”
Comprehensive Health adds color to the course list here at [blank]. On one occasion, the students were studying drugs and the effect drugs could have on the human body. A few days later they had an assembly where they were shown a postcard on steroids. “Tsk, tsk, tsk.” one student said. “Promoting drugs through magazine selling. Postcard on steroids? See what they teach us here?!” On another occasion, the students had to watch a video of a baby being born. All of the students loved this video more that words can express.
Band and orchestra broaden the horizons of the students who take them immensely. In addition to learning how to play wonderful songs on clean, shining instruments, the students receive important advice on everyday ventures. For example, one group of students was told not to buy red or blue clarinets, because they were made at Sears and therefore cheap. The class also learned one of the most important rules in life after a clarinet squeaked. They learned that they should always “blame others for our mistakes, or just make fun of them.”
These classes are all very important to making this school what it is, but there is one more element that ties it all together. That element is simple human interactions. Unfortunately, many of these interactions are less then friendly. On one occasion, for example, one student told another that, “I hope you like being hated by the student body.” Along with the cruelty, many interactions are just funny. On another occasion, an English class was talking about lottery tickets. “I still get carded when I buy a lottery ticket.” the teacher complained. A student asked, “Would you rather they said, ‘take it and get out of here you old hag’?”
All of these classes, events, topics, and the people at [blank] work together to make the school great. And thankfully, the school gets more interesting by the day. All of the students hope that [blank] will stay just as unique and interesting for many more years to come, and that the high school will be just as interesting.
Sorry...you have to know some of these people to really get why this is funny...but for those of you who currently or have ever attended the same Jr. High as I did...you'll appreciate this.
