Chapter One
Brightkit was squeeling as her white-and-ginger mother was dragged off by a muscular tom, but she was pulled back into the nursery and licked vigorously by a golden-brown tabby queen. She heard the flash of claws and screeches of pain outside, and her eyes closed as the queen pressed her body over Brightkit protectivly. She shut her eyes as tight as she could, until she heard nothing anymore.
Brightkit woke with a start, breathing heavily only to find herself safe in StoneClan's nursery beside Flowerfeather, the golden-brown tabby queen who had offered to take care of her after her mother was killed.
She felt Flowerfeather shift, and Brightkit looked over at the kit who she had made friends with in the short amount of time since they opened their eyes. A shiver ran down her spine as she remembered her dream, but her mother was killed a moon ago, only a moment after Brightkit was born.
Her best friend, Ripplekit, the white-and-light gray she-cat, was sleeping soundly, curled up next to her mother. Brightkit looked at the white scrap of fur next to Ripplekit, his pale gray tail wrapped over his nose. It was Ripplekit's brother, Frozenkit.
Brightkit wished that she had a sibling, but she knew that she was the only one born before her mother's death. Besides, it was only a matter of time until Flowerfeather had her kits, so soon, she'd be sharing her sleeping space curled up next to her foster mother.
Brightkit heard a small yawn, and looked over to see that her friend was awake. Brightkit got up, careful not to disturb Flowerfeather, and shook some scraps of dry moss from her white-and-brown pelt. Her bright amber eyes shone with happiness when she saw her freind already padding toward her. "Hi Brightkit," Ripplekit whispered.
"Hi," Brightkit whispered back, trying not to wake the queens. She touched noses with her friend in greeting. The two StoneClan kits poked their heads out of the small stone cave lined with moss that made up StoneClan's nursery, and saw that the deputy, Eagleheart, was already organising the dawn patrol.
"Boo!" Brightkit and Ripplekit jumped, and turned around to see the rude dark ginger kit, Flamekit. His tail-tip was white, and his yellow eyes shone with satisfaction of making the other two kits jump.
"Flamekit!" Brightkit let out a hushed hiss. She heard rustleing in the nursery. He'd woke up the queens. Brightkit waited for the shreik that would come from Ripplekit's mother, Moonface, and from Brightkit's foster mother, Flowerfeather.
"Where's Brightkit!" Flowerfeather cried as she rushed out of the nursery, Moonface right behind her.
"Here?" Brightkit murmered quietly as she looked down at her paws.
"Good thing I was still in the nursery when I scared you," Brightkit heard Flamekit whisper in her ear as he went back to his mother, Wolftail.
"What do you think you were doing, giving us a scare like that! I told you to stay in the nursery until I was awake!" The two queens meowed at the same time. Brightkit just stared at her paws, only looking up to exchange an "it was my fault" glance with Ripplekit.
"What's going on here?" A voice rumbled behind the two kits. It was Eagleheart. If this got to the elders, the two kits would probrobly be thought of as troublemakers when the news spread through the camp.
Great, Brightkit thought sarcasticly.

Great, Brightkit thought sarcasticly.
"You both know not to go anywhere without your mothers' permission," Eaglheart meowed. Brightkit and Ripplekit were sitting side by side, and Brightkit could feel Flamekit's mocking stare burning into her pelt. Why does he have to be so mean? What did we ever do to him? Brightkit thought angrily, barely listening to Eagleheart.
"Promise me you won't do it again," the deputy was meowing to the moon-old kits.
"I promise," came Ripplekit's soft mew.
"Brightkit?" Eagleheart prompted.
Brightkit let out a soft sigh. "I promise," she mewed. To try, she added silently.
xxx
Sunhigh in the nursery was silent, except for the pawsteps outside, but they sounded soft from inside the den. Brightkit sat at the enturance, watching all of the activity in the camp, wishing she could be as free as them in stead of being stuck in the nursery.
Brightkit let out a long sigh as her eyes followed Thornfang, Gingertail, Truepaw, and Dawnpaw out of camp for a patrol, until their tails dissappeard from sight. Why can't I go on patrols? Brightkit asked herself, but she already knew what the answer was going to be if she were to ask someone: "You're too young!"
Daydreaming, Brightkit hadn't even noticed her freind calling her name.
"Brightkit!" meowed Ripplekit desperatly, "It's time to eat!"
"Huh?" Brightkit meowed, "Oh, yeah! I'm coming." She turned around and followed Ripplekit under the shady roof of the nursery. The only warmth was the warmth from the bodies of the cats inside. Brightkit layed down next to Flowerfeather, who layed on her side, and started to drink the warm milk. Swiftpool, StoneClan's medicine cat, had given Flowerfeather borage leaves to help her produce more milk for Brightkit.
I don't see what the big deal is, the she-kit thought, We just took a few steps outside the nursery. It wasn't like there was any danger out there. They were in the heart of StoneClan! And it's leaf-bare... Brightkit's thoughts were also full of questions. What was so dangerous out there? Was it the other Clans? Would they really attack in leaf-bare? Wouldn't they be heard in the crunching snow?
These were things Brightkit would have to find out herself.
"A kit shouldn't have their eyes filled with thoughts."
Brightkit truned around to see Flowerfeather sitting in her nest, giving herself a few quick licks.
"Why don't you go outside and play with Ripplekit," Flowerfeather meowed, "They went outside while you were daydreaming."
Brightkit nodded, gave her foster mother a quik nuzzle, then hurried outside.
