It had been two months since the cubs were born. They were taking their first steps outside, and wanted to pounce on everything that interested them...like thier father's tail.
"Yeeooouch!!" snarled Sinbad, as Kelt, the oldest, sank his needle-like claws into his father's tail.
"Sorry, Dad," he squeaked, showing his tiny white teeth.
"Kelt! There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you! Come back to the den this instant!"
Kelt cringed as his mother yowled. "But Mom, I'm not sleepy! Can't I stay here with Dad?"
"Oh, no. You've caused enough trouble for today. Now let's go."
Sighing, Kelt padded towards the cave. As he reached the threshold, he could here his sister snoring, and his two brothers growling in their sleep.
Suddenly, the prospect of retreating to the dark cave when there was a whole new world to explore seemed repulsive. Kelt wheeled around, ran between his mother's paws, and dashed down the rocky slope.
He could hear Cresta's angry snarl, but he kept going. The ground loomed large ahead of him, and he jumped the last two feet, landing safely in a sea of golden grass. He kept running, oblivious to where he was going, just wanting to get as much distance as he could between himself and the den.
Because the grass was over his head, he couldn't see that the ground fell away to the bank of the river, and soon....SPLASH!!! Kelt fell into the cool river. He sank for a moment, then bobbed back up like a cork in a bathtub, spitting water and soaked to the skin. Looking desperately around for land, he caught sight of a log. Paddling as quickly as he could, he reached the branch and clambered up, panting in exhaustion and fear. He had never run so far before. He closed his eyes, and felt the log ride the current upstream...wait, UPSTREAM? Rivers don't flow up, they flow down! Kelt opend his eyes, and realized that he had climbed onto the back of a crocodile!
Kelt looked around and saw the bank not a foot away. He gathered his strength to spring to safety, and leaped.
For a second, he felt peaceful, up in the air...until he went nosedown in the sand. He heard a hiss, and discovered that the croc knew he was missing a meal, because now it had pulled itself out of the river and was making its way toward him!
Kelt couldn't move-he was frozen in fear! He could see the gaping jaws coming closer...and closer...!
